The couple from the Woodstock album cover are still married!

Flame Introductions loves a tale of long-term love, and we think we might have just found the ultimate, heart-melting story of commitment and friendship. On Sunday August 17th 1969, the third day of Woodstock, a couple were photographed standing in the mud, swaddled in a blanket among the debris of the iconic festival.

The image would go on to become a symbol of those three days of peace and music on a dairy farm in upstate New York—and the cover of the festival’s album soundtrack.

Almost 50 years later, that iconic couple are still together and as much in love as they ever were. They are Nick and Bobbi Ercoline, they married two years after the iconic festival and are now grandparents.

It’s easy to see from the tender and protective embrace that was captured all those years ago, that the young couple in their early 20s, a local housing officer and a school nurse, were very much in love. But Nick insists nothing has changed.

“I try to explain that photo as a couple of 20-year-olds who were in love with each other. It’s us. That’s who we are. Still. You can still find us holding hands and hugging each other. Still,” he said.

His advice for an enduring relationship? “A lot of communication. Don’t go to bed mad at each other. It’s a give-and-take. Choose your battles.”

The pair met at a local diner in 1969, where Nick fell in love with the “gorgeous girl with long, blonde hair” on first sight. She was in a relationship with a waiter there, but when that other guy left for Memorial Day weekend, Nick took his chance and they’ve been together ever since.

In August, the pair trekked 8 kilometres to the festival grounds and stayed one night, so far back in the crowds they could barely see the stage.

The sleeping figure, also seen in the album cover, was a friend of the couple who’d just returned from Vietnam. Like the marriage of Nick and Bobbi, their friendship with ex Marine Corps Jim Corcoran has also survived.
