Stuck for Valentine's gift ideas? Survey proves it really is the thought that counts

With Valentine's Day approaching, you're no doubt wondering what to get that special person in your life—whether that's your long term lover, or someone you just met but would like to get to know better.

But for the cash-strapped, or indeed anyone who doesn't want to make too grand a gesture for fear of putting too much pressure on their fledging relationship, there's good news: where receiving gifts is concerned, it really is the thought that counts.

That said, choosing a thoughtful gift might be easier said than done. A survey has revealed that nearly half of us (47%) has received a gift from a partner which made us seriously doubt if they'd put any thought into it at all. And for one in eight of us, that can lead to serious concerns about the relationship and whether the other person really knows us.

Many of us though, are much more likely to fib and say thank you, while 10% are likely to go one step further and declare that they love a gift they in fact hate.

So if you're still struggling to find that perfect gift, take heart from the fact that you can't go far wrong if you just spend a little time thinking about what the other person would truly appreciate. And if you really want to know what you should absolutely avoid, take a look at this list of some of the worst gifts ever received...

1. A flashlight and battery charger—for Valentine’s Day failed to light up the receiver.

2. A cat was given to a woman who was allergic to them—by her boyfriend of over two years.

3. One man received the same DVD they were given by the same person the year before.

4. A screen door—the giver had forgotten it was his partner’s birthday and tried to cover it up.

5. One person dug themselves into a hole by giving a snow shovel for a Christmas present.

6. Another woman asked for something practical—she received a toaster.

7. One lady felt her birthday gift sucked—it was a vacuum cleaner.

8. One receiver opened a lint brush, denture tablets, styptic pencil and some deodorant—also with a receipt showing they were purchased on Christmas morning.

9. A man’s girlfriend surprised him with a personalised umbrella—with his name misspelled.

10. Another girl was less than enthused to discover her present was a collection of used candles.
