Listen up: music makes you fall in love!

They don’t call it mood music for nothing, and if the mood you want to strike were one of lurrrrve, you’d be wise to consider your playlist before you pop your iPod on shuffle.

Researchers at a Japanese university discovered that pairs who chatted for the first time amid background music were more likely to be positive about their date and look forward to a second, than those who got to know one another without music in their backdrop.

Both sets of couples were serious about finding a partner – they were all meeting for konkatsu (“marriage hunting”) and were given instructions to keep the conversation light and amicable. But it was those whose conversation was accompanied with a playlist created by researchers who seemed to be the most firmly stuck by Cupid’s arrow.

There are several theories for why this is the case. Some way that music alters people’s behaviour and makes them feel and appear happier and more charming to their companion. Others say that silence or pauses in conversation are less awkward or apparent when filled with tunes.

Silence, then, is a dater’s enemy and the wise love-seeker will look to find bars and coffee shops where the atmosphere is infused with happy beats.

Sadly the researchers didn’t say which types of music are more likely to synchronise with the heartbeats of prospective lovers, but we have a few ideas. For a new date we think cool and classic love songs will win out over a slushfest of cheesy ballads – definitely ones for the playlist or to request of the DJ:

1. Countdown by Beyonce

Queen Bey’s ode to the special person in her life covers countless key changes and is a rousing testimony to the power of love.

2. River Deep – Mountain High by Ike & Tina Turner

There’s no denying the power of this duet, complete with a backing group of over 20 gospel singers.

3. Heartbeat by Buddy Holly

Sweet without being sickly, this uplifting tune perfectly encapsulates the lovey-doveyness of new romance.

4. That’s How Strong My Love Is by Otis Reading

With a voice like velvet, this track could make even the hardest hearted believe in l’amour.

5. Let’s Stay Together by Al Green

This effortlessly cool love song has been covered multiple times but the original is still the best.

6. Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours by Stevie Wonder

This classic Wonder hit was released when the icon was only 20 years old, but loses none of its power for it.

7. The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson

C’mon girl! This is one of Jacko’s sexiest tracks and one guaranteed to get you every time!
