5 things you didn't know about Love Actually

It’s been 12 years since Love Actually hit cinema screens, and everyone’s favourite Christmas film is still one of the silver screen's finest takes on relationships.

If you’re as besotted with the nine overlapping love stories as we are, you’ll love these little known facts, as revealed by writer Emma Freud (partner of Four Weddings And A Funeral director Richard Curtis) during a special anniversary screening in New York…

DID HARRY REALLY HAVE AN AFFAIR WITH HIS SECRETARY MIA?

Unfortunately, he did. Writer, Freud, begged her partner, the film's director, to make it just a flirtation, but Alan Rickman's character definitely did the dirty on his wife, Karen, played by Emma Thompson (remember the heartbreaking scene when she realises on Christmas morning that the jewellery she found hidden in her husband's bedside table wasn't for her after all?). There is a happy ending however: in writer, Freud's imagination, the couple battle through the betrayal and stay together. Phew.

ROWAN ATKINSON WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ANGEL!

Remember when the department store worker played by Rowan Atkinson drives his customer insane when he spends forever gift-wrapping his mistress' sparkler as his unsuspecting wife shops in the background? Well Atkinson wasn't just playing an annoying shop worker - his character was actually written as that of an angel, trying to dissuade Harry from buying the present for his lover. That little discovery just got cut from the script!

A SOCK SPARED MARTIN FREEMAN'S DIGNITY

John and Judy's unlikely love story begins when they star naked alongside one another in an erotic video. Actor Martin Freeman was allowed to wear a sock in place of underwear to spare his - or actress' Joanna Page's - blushes!

NO EXTRAS WERE NEEDED FOR THE FILM

All those lovers greeting one another at Heathrow, the children in the nativity play, the house staff at number 10 Downing Street - you thought they were all extras, right? No need for that when writer Freud has an extended family and a huge circle of friends. All the airport couples were relatives and friends, her children took part in the school play, and her mother played the Housekeeper at the PM's home!

COLIN FIRTH HAD HELP WITH HIS KISSING TECHNIQUE

You'd have thought Colin Firth would have had enough practice kissing the leading women in his life. But when he sweeps into the restaurant where his crush Aurelia is waitressing and proposes marriage, the resulting kiss was choreographed to within an inch of its life. Freud directed him to place his thumb gently on her bottom lip before he went in for the snog.

A MAD MEN CHARACTER TOOK A SURPRISINGLY COMEDIC ROLE

The woman who Colin (played by Kris Marshall) fell in love with in the bar? That was January Jones AKA Betty Draper in Mad Men, normally seen chain smoking at home and becoming increasingly more miserable as her scoundrel husband Don sleeps his way around Manhattan . Freud revealed that the blonde bombshell was so funny throughout the bar scene that they let her ad lib most of her lines.
