5 ways to beat the January blues and stay focussed on your relationship goals

We know from experience (and the number of calls coming into Flame HQ) that January is a time when many single people are making a goal to find lasting love. And why not? After all, it's a time for new beginnings, spring is around the corner (even if it doesn't quite seem that way yet), and there's a feeling of change, or at least the potential for change, hanging in the air.

Unfortunately the winter months don't always make it easy for us to stick to our goals. Short days and long, bone-chilling nights combined with post Christmas credit card bills and the need to lose a pound or too can put even the best laid plans to ruin as we dive for the duvet and embark on a longterm relationship with Netflix.

But it doesn't have to be that way. By making the effort to undertake a little self care, the January doldrums don't have to block your path to love and happiness. Follow our five steps to ensuring you stay happy and healthy, and with a little luck thrown in for good measure*, 2019 could be the year you find The One.

This doesn't have to mean forking out for a gym membership, unless of course you want to. Enjoy long walks, dust off that fitness DVD or take up yoga. As soon as your blood starts pumping, the endorphins can set to work to banish those January blues.

It's scientifically proven: when you take time to reflect on all that you have (as opposed to all that you lack), you are happier, ergo more attractive to others, all round. So while you may not have everything your heart desires at this exact moment in time, spend a few minutes each day thanking your lucky stars for what you do have, and you'll reap the rewards.

If you're not feeling entirely happy with yourself or your current circumstances, it's all too easy to forget to show kindness or compassion to others. Make an effort to give genuine compliments and offers of help to others, and you'll feel better about yourself.

The winter months can make a hermit out of even the biggest party animals. Ensure you stay active by making plans for enjoyable activities, whether it's meeting up with friends or taking a night class. Connection to others can be a major boost.

Life admin is rarely riveting, even less so in the weeks following a festive period filled with lazy days, parting, friends and food. But sometimes you've just got to get stuck in to getting things done. Carve out some time to make a to do list of all the things you're dreading, breaking them down into bitesize chunks so that they feel bearable and doable. That first step might be the hardest, but once you've made that list, you'll feel more ready and able to crack on with it.
