Revealed: The top ten ways to say 'I love you'

So much for the stiff upper lip. A survey has revealed that Brits are perfectly comfortable whispering those three little words, with nearly half us telling partners we love them every single day—but spelling it out isn't the only way to show someone they have a piece of your heart.

Forty per cent of people in relationships utter an 'I love you' each day. Those without significant others have plenty of love to whisper too: four in ten say 'I love you' to a pet on a daily basis, 30% tell parents they are loved each week, and 27% tell friends how much they love them at least once a week.

But just how necessary is it to tell someone you love them? While it's nice to hear, four out of ten adults taking part in the survey for Thorntons chocolates admit that hearing the words too often can devalue their sentiment.

Fortunately, there are many more ways to say 'I love you' than a straightforward exchange of words. Emojis, texts, WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook and Instagram are common platforms for sharing matters of the heart. But beyond that, Brits say that it's possible to show someone they're loved without saying a single thing.

Accepting a person's imperfections is the number one way someone can demonstrate they truly love another, while companionable silence comes in at second place. Warming up the bed, being quiet in the morning as you leave, and saving the last chocolate all make the top ten.

  1. Accepting a person’s imperfections
  2. Being comfortable sat in silence with each other
  3. Travelling long distances to see each other
  4. Calling/messaging when you say you will
  5. Saving your loved one the last chocolate from the box
  6. Taking your partner out for a meal
  7. Surprising your partner with a holiday / trip away
  8. Warming up the bed for you
  9. Buying gifts
  10. Being quiet in the morning as you leave
