Deaf woman receives marriage proposal seconds after hearing for the first time

Could someone pass a hanky please - there's some serious eye leakage going down at Flame Introductions headquarters.

The tears first started flowing when a doctor turned on the cochlear implants that a young woman had recently had fitted - Andrea Diaz had been deaf all her life and the devices, embedded in the skin behind the ear and used by around 11,000 Brits, were to enable her to hear for the very first time.

She was understandably emotional as she heard first the doctor's words and then her own squeaks of joy and laughter as the success of the operation became apparent to her. But what happened next was totally unexpected.

Her boyfriend, Kevin Peakman, offering moral support from the corner of the office, reached out and took his girlfriend's hand, before telling her he had a surprise for her.

"Can you hear me?" he asked, to ecstatic nods from his partner. "It sounds weird!" she cried.

“I wanted to make one of the first things that you hear is me asking you to marry me,” he said, dropping to one knee. "Because I love you so much and you're my best friend."

Between sobs, Andrea managed to squeal a "Yes!" before declaring "I can hear your voice!"
