• Drinking red wine over conversation

Dating nightmares: What happens when the wine bill turns up

Never mind the awkward conversation about going double Dutch, the real drama of stumping up time on your date comes when you realise that £50 bottle of wine actually costs £5,000. And you had three!

A couple’s story set the Internet chatting when it turned out that after ordering three bottles of wine on their first date, they were astonished to find that the wine bill was a staggering £15,000, rather than the already pricey £150 they were expecting. Ouch!

It’s not known if the couple remained together (either way, they’ve either got a fabulous story to tell their grandchildren or a serious aversion to wine bars for ever more!), but we do know that at least one half of the party has a direct debit set up to pay off the restaurant over the next ten years!

Writing on a Facebook thread, one diner wrote: “Me and my hubby got engaged on the 1st night of our cruise in Egypt. To celebrate we ordered champagne for what we thought was £50. All the staff crowded around us make a real fuss. In fact they were very attentive all holiday. When we came to settle to bill the champagne was actually £500, we had got the exchange rate wrong. I wouldn't mind but we didn't even drink it all!!!”

“When chip and pin first starting giving you the option to add a tip, without reading the screen properly ( and not having my glasses on!) I once entered my PIN number as a tip luckily before it went thru the lovely waiter asked if I had meant to add that much! Phew!”

“After supporting my daughter at the hospital through the birth of her youngest son, my son in law and I called for a take out curry from a local restaurant on the way home. I was presented with the card machine to pay and was just about to enter my pin when I noticed the amount read £15,000 instead of £15 ! All I could say was, 'I don't think that's right !' The poor waiter was mortified.”

“Me and hubby were in Thailand at a fancy restaurant once and nearly ordered a £12,000 bottle of red because we hadn’t quite worked out the currency.”

Always count those zeroes, people!
