Autism: a special animation that explains the condition

Flame Introductions is the UK's leading matchmaking service for adults with mild disabilities. And while we're very used to meeting and communicating with individuals with autism, we know that this special condition is still hugely misunderstood by many.

That's why we'd like to share this lovely animation, which explains what goes on inside the autistic brain in such beautifully simply terms.

Each of us is a unique individual, with favourite foods, likes, skills and ways of perceiving and experiencing the world and everything in it. The autistic brain is connected in such a way it affects the senses and how we perceive and read situations and interactions.

This 'special wiring' means that a person with autism may have remarkable skills such as maths or drawing which may come much harder to a person without autism. But on the other hand, activities which a person without autism might find fairly run of the mill, like making friends, can be overwhelmingly difficult for a person with autism.

This overwhelm and confusion affects how they see the world, and sadly, those individuals may have the added complication of not being able to accurately express how they feel in a difficult moment. So even if they are feeling chaotic, such as in a busy or loud environment, they may seem okay.

We all have ways of reacting when we're upset. We might fidget, bite our lips or give ourselves a gentle hug. People with autism have similar mechanisms, but these may seem unusual. It's important to remember that this 'odd' behaviour is simply a coping mechanism, and so we must be kind and accepting.

We'll leave you with a lovely line from the animation: 'Just because an Xbox can't play a PlayStation game, doesn't mean it's broken. Autism can make amazing things happen!'
