It’s said that weddings are great places
to meet the future love of your life. The free-flowing champagne, relaxed
atmosphere and the wonderful romance of the occasion all adds up to the perfect
recipe for blossoming love.
That’s certainly true for Adrian and Brooke Franklin, who first met at a wedding…when they were just five-year-old babes.
Adrian was the ring bearer and for Brooke, the little flower girl, it was love at first sight. “I had a crush on him from the start,” she told ABC News. “[But] he absolutely could not stand me. He said ‘I got on his nerves’.”
But Brooke wasn’t going to give up that easily. After the pair walked the aisle together as cute-as-a-button tots in 2001, she set her heart on winning Adrian’s love. Alas her efforts at wooing her little man were not successful at first. “I'd tried to play with him at school and at church and he just didn't want much to do with me at all.”
“I was always trying to get away from her and run from her and hide from her,” Adrian admitted. “[But] every time our paths would go separate ways, we'd reconnect.”
It turns out that playing hard to get was the way to Adrian’s heart. When they reached high school, everything changed, and teenage Adrian asked Brooke to be his girlfriend, shyly tracing the question on her back with his fingertips and asking her to guess what he wanted to say. “You didn’t write a question mark,” was Brooke’s initial response, but Adrian’s lackadaisical grammar couldn’t get in the way of true love, and the pair began to date.
Seventeen years after their very first wedding attendance, Brooke and Adrian walked the aisle again, this time as bride and groom. “Before our wedding day I had a sign made that said ‘Will you marry me’, but I cut the question mark out. I asked her to marry me and I said, ‘Here's your question mark’.” And luckily for Adrian, this time his lovely wife-to-be didn’t hesitate to say "yes".
Among the 300 guests are their wedding ceremony was the very bride from that 2001 wedding, who’d remained a family friend. She brought along a picture from her own wedding – which took place at the very same church, and gave the newlyweds the surprise of their lives; they’d forgotten that they’d already walked up the aisle together.
The picture is now on proud display in their marital home, alongside the two of them during their first moments as husband and wife. The Franklins say they can’t wait to share the story – and the pictures that prove it – with their future children and grandchildren.
