Hollywood’s golden couple calls it a day (sob)

While some celebrity breakups barely register on the shock-o-meter (Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards anyone?), some tinsel town marriages seem so rock solid that news of a separation and impending divorce makes us question if any relationship can last (if you’re having similar thoughts, read our wonderful story of a love still going strong after 57 years of marriage and our blog The secrets of the world’s longest married couples).

Such was the feeling when we learned that one of the highest profile long-time pairings in Hollywood were to go their separate ways. No, we’re not talking about Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. We’re referring, of course, to Kermit The Frog and Miss Piggy, who recently announced that following “thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling” they have called time on their occasionally tumultuous 40-year-romance.

The pair wed in a star-studded ceremony in May 2014, following a 35-year engagement during which an earlier marriage was annulled on account of a defrocked priest. The bride wore Vivienne Westwood. The groom looked shell-shocked.

“It's an interesting thing that happens sometimes – you're with someone for years, and you suddenly discover that you have gone in two different directions,” Kermit told E! News. “And when you're a frog and a pig, those directions can be extreme.”

While cynics were quick to question if the announcement was a publicity stunt designed to draw attention to the new series of Muppets, Miss Piggy took to Twitter to confirm that she is single and on the lookout for love, messaging the actor Alan Cummings to say that he should line up his cute single friends.

.@Alancumming Oh, dear Alan... As much as moi loves a good publicity stunt, this is not one! Let your cute, single friends know, 'kay?

Kermit, meanwhile, appears to have wasted no time moving on. Reports suggest that he is already having a new love affair with another pig, said to be a member of the ABC network’s marketing team. And though Miss Piggy is yet to comment on the rumours, Kermit himself Tweeted confirmation that he is indeed enjoying a romance with “sweet Denise”.

.@emmyrossum Hi-ho, Emmy! Unfortunately, I'm seeing someone else... Denise. She's in publicity at the network. She's sweet, you'd like her!

Perhaps Miss Piggy can take comfort in the fact that Kermit still has a thing for her species.

“It's the curly tail," the famed amphibian told Entertainment Tonight. “It's fascinating. I don't know why it makes a difference to frogs, but it's pretty cool.”

Though he couldn’t resist a dig at his sometimes overbearing ex: “For years, we've had a professional relationship," he said.  “I've been professional. She wanted a relationship.”

One of us is certainly professional,” shot back Miss Piggy. Ouch! Or should that be ‘Oink!’?

Something tells us it might not be the end for this warring – but nonetheless lovely - couple. Best of luck, Kermit and Miss Piggy.
