The tunnel of love? 5 facts about romance on London's Underground

Is the humble Oyster card the ultimate aphrodisiac? The Tube has been moving Londoners from A to B for over 150 years, but some lucky commuters got more than they bargained for...

1. ALL ABOARD THE LOVE TRAIN...

Almost half of Tube users say they see someone who takes their fancy at least once a week, while one in ten find themselves eyeing up a stranger daily!

Poll by mxData, the company behind London’s Underground’s smartphone app.

2. LOVE AND CARRIAGE...

Tax inspector Will Gull spotted teacher Katie Crammer across a Central Line carriage. He slipped her a note telling her she was beautiful. After a whirlwind romance he popped the question (at South Woodford station – where else?) and the pair later returned in their wedding regalia to thank ticket office staff for inadvertently playing Cupid!

3. NOT ALL LINES ARE EQUAL...

Research conducted into the best Tube lines for finding a date discovered that the Bakerloo is the best for finding a fashionable, hip young thing, the Central and Northern lines tie for having the most attractive commuters, the Circle line has the classiest clientele, the Docklands Light Railway has the hunkiest men, while the Victoria line is best avoided if you’re after a date – that handsome city type or ultra glam lady is most likely to be already taken.

4. A WEDDING DAY GOES DOWN THE TUBE

They're not all cold and drafty - in fact, some stations so inspire those who walk through them each day that they're considered rather beautiful. Margot White loved the cathedral-sized Canary Wharf station where she worked as an administrative assistant so much, she booked it out to have her marriage blessed in, in the presence of 70 wedding guests.

5. CRUSHING ALL OVER THE PLACE

For most commuters, Metro's Rush Hour Crush column is a way to pass the time while they''re stuck under a fellow traveller's armpit. For others, it's a last ditch attempt to track down someone they spotted across the platform who they just can't get out of their heads. And over the years, these personal ads have ranged from the sweet to the just plain bonkers...
