The Great lovers series: David & Victoria Beckham

Their lives are so public you might think you know everything there is to know about the Beckhams and their love life. But some of these little known facts are a reminder of why this marriage remains one of the tightest in showbiz.

DAVID IS A SENTIMENTALIST AT HEART

Victoria and David fell in love at first glance in the Manchester United players' lounge. Victoria was smitten at the sight of David standing with his family, while all the other players were at the bar with their mates. His closeness to his parents and siblings was one of the first things that attracted Victoria, who is also very family orientated. But the most romantic fact to have emerged from their first meeting, is that David has kept the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which Victoria jotted her telephone number during their fateful first conversation.

THEIR FIRST DATE WASN'T THE MOST GLAMOROUS AFFAIR...

Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller didn't want Victoria Adams going public with her romance with the handsome young footballer until things were serious. And as Becks was still living in lodgings, their early meet ups took place in a BMW parked around the back of a Harvester pub. "We used to kiss," revealed David. "[But really it was] just to spend time together."

THEIR VOW RENEWALS WERE AN UNCHARACTERISTICALLY LOW KEY AFFAIR

The Beckhams' 1999 wedding was a lavish affair, the couple gracing the cover of a celebrity magazine, resplendent in matching crowns as they sat on personalised thrones. But when the couple, some 16 years later, renewed their vows, they did so in a private ceremony at home with just six guests present, and managed to keep it entirely secret until David spilt the beans in a recent interview.

THEY DON'T PRETEND THEIR MARRIAGE IS PERFECT

The pair's ups and downs have been well documented over the years, but the Beckhams have stuck together through thick and thin. Speaking to presenter Kirsty Young during a special 75th anniversary edition of Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, David said: "Of course you make mistakes over the years. And we all know marriage is difficult at times… [but] it’s about working through it. We have come up against tough times. But we know each other better than anyone else knows us. And we talk."
