• Benedict Cumberbatch engagement notification in The Times

Our favourite engagement and wedding announcements of all time

It’s been a fantastic month of celebrity engagements, with both our favourite Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch announcing their respective engagements.

Both Geri and Benedict opted to reveal their betrothals to Formula One boss Christian Horner and actress/director Sophie Hunter the traditional way – by taking out announcements in The Times newspaper.

While we’re big fans of traditional romance, here at Spark Of Love we also love seeing engagements announced in creative ways. So we’ve had a nose around the Internet to find some of the quirkier ways celebrity and non-celebrity couples alike have announced their engagements and marriages. Here are some of our favourites, from the unashamedly romantic to the downright bizarre!

Matthew McConaughey & Camlia Alves engagement pictureMatthew McConaughey & Camila Alves

When the actor popped the question to his now wife on Christmas Day 2011 after five years and two children together, he shared the moment with the world by posting on Twitter this cute picture of the pair alongside the words ‘Just asked camila to marry me, #MerryChristmas’ (sic). We love the direct approach! Image: Twitter

MacKenzie & BlakeMacKenzie & Blake engagement announcement on Facebook

When this young couple fell in love and decided to marry, they shared their engagement – and the fact that it was MacKenzie’s first and only relationship with a woman (she’d previously only dated men) - with the world. After positing this series of hilarious questions on Facebook, the post quickly went viral and soon the whole world and his and her wife were offering their congratulations!

George Clooney & Amal Alamuddin

This ultra private couple kept news of the long-time bachelor’s proposal to his lawyer girlfriend within their inner circle, toasting the news only with close friends including Cindy Crawford. But as the rumour mill went into overdrive, Amal’s excited colleagues simply couldn’t keep the news to themselves, sending out a press release reading: ‘The staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin, a member of Chambers, and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married.’ How sweet!

When the Made In Chelsea star was proposed to by rapper boyfriend Pro G during a romantic trip to Paris, she couldn’t wait to share the news with the world. Along with the words ‘If I could scream loud enough for the whole world to hear I would’ she posted an Instagram picture of her hand adorned with a beautiful diamond ring. Image: Instagram

We’re not sure what’s funnier about this engagement announcement parodying Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies (Put A Ring On it)’ music video. Perhaps it’s the fact that both the future bride and groom are wearing leotards. Or maybe it’s the expression on their dog Cooper’s face! The photoshoot and subsequent announcement was intended only for their friends and family’s pleasure, but it was shared so widely it quickly became one of the biggest engagement announcements in viral history! Picture: Mirz Photography
