He was a 21-year-old Syrian refuge earning his keep as a salesman in Connecticut. She was the 17-year-old girl next door, all set to marry - on her father's orders - a man two decades older. The year was 1932, and John and Ann Betar had other ideas about their future.

The young romantics eloped to Harrison, New York, where they married in secret. Fast forward 83 years, now aged 104 and 100, they are recognised as America's longest wedded couple, with a marriage that's lasted longer in years than some Hollywood unions last in days. What's their secret? On Valentine's Day 2016 they took to Twitter - in a chat hosted by the app Handy - to share what they've learned over eight decades together about keeping the flame alive, making up after a fight and raising respectful children.
